The Faraway Horses by Buck Brannaman
Softcover, 288 pages, illustrated with black and white, color photos
Nearly every week of the year, Buck Brannaman is on the road, conducting horsemanship clinics in which he teaches horse owners how to better understand and work with their animals, creating a relationship based on trust and respect rather than force. Buck's skills have become legendary in fact, the main character in Robert Redford's film The Horse Whisperer was based largely on him, and he served as the director's technical adviser during the shoot.
"These principles are really about life - about living your life so you're not at war with the horse, or with other people," Buck writes. At heart, this rich and rewarding autobiography is ultimately a prescription for living a harmonious existence - whether it involves horses or not.

Gina's note: Both this book and DVD (Buck) are based on Buck Brannaman's life and his philosophy for working with horses. Both are fascinating in their own right, but if you're inclined to read - the book fleshes out a great deal of details about the man that the film can't fit in. I recommend both as a set to fully appreciate the story.

I Make Horse Calls - Set of 3 Books
|
Interesting characters, both human and equine, enrich the lives of veterinarians everyday. I Make Horse Calls and More Horse Calls are collections of true heartwarming, not heartbreaking, stories from equine veterinary practice.
It has been 30 years since James Herriot captivated reading audiences world-wide with his heartwarming and poignant stories from rural veterinary practice in England. If you loved All Creatures Great and Small, you'll love these books too. Join a modern American veterinarian as she travels the countryside helping an intriguing array of horse owners and their equally interesting horses.
You'll meet:
Mystery, the mare who trains her unsuspecting owner to come when she calls, and do a trick upon arrival
Annie, the gorgeous Foxtrotter who clearly knows the world revolves around her, tells her tale of love and peril
Jet, the retired racehorse who needs the assistance of the local fire department's Heavy Rescue Unit not once, but twice, when he puts himself in danger
The Filbert clan, who thinks that veterinary services should not only be available at a moment's notice and be free, but that veterinary advice, once requested, should be ignored
The class of unsuspecting junior high school students who come to the veterinary clinic for career day, not knowing that today's surgery will be a castration
From the rare diseases that pose diagnostic challenges, to the exhilaration of saving lives and the joy of life itself, these true, uplifting stories allow the reader a personal glimpse into the world of veterinary practice. I Make Horse Calls and More Horse Calls define the importance of teamwork between owner and veterinarian in order to save the lives of animals, while exposing the depth of the human-animal bond. These humorous and poignant stories entertain readers with a wide array of equine and human characters and along the way deliver small doses of education about horse care. They illustrate the dedication of veterinarians and the important role owners play in the health care team that maintains their horses' good health.
If you've ever thought about becoming a veterinarian, you'll enjoy following the author on her challenging journey from show horse groom, through pre-vet classes through veterinary school and into practice. Suitable for ages 12 and up, the stories are mostly humorous, reflecting life with a small dose of poignancy.

Equine ER
Stories from a Year in the Life of an Equine Veterinary Hospital
by Leslie Guttman, Softcover, 245 pages
Equine ER follows a team of elite veterinarians at the "Mayo Clinic" of horse hospitals in the Kentucky Bluegrass. The most cutting-edge veterinary medicine in the world is performed on the clinic's four-footed patients, whether it is an experimental drug on a mare dying of pleural pneumonia or emergency surgery to save the life of a famous racehorse. The book follows the emotional journeys that veterinarians and owners embark on when a beloved horse becomes ill. By turns thrilling, humorous, and medically fascinating, Equine ER is also a window into the unique, pastoral way of life that still exists on Bluegrass horse farms, one largely untouched by time and where doctors still make house calls on their equine patients.
Gina's note: Journalist Leslie Guttman did an incredible job documenting a year inside one of the country's largest hospitals for horses. Equine ER is much more than just an account of shocking injuries and illnesses, repaired/cured at the 11th hour by a team of the best equine veterinarians. Leslie adds a degree of observation and insight to the stories that make this book one of my favorites.

Love is the Best Medicine
What Two Dogs Taught One Veterinarian About Hope, Humility and Everyday Miracles
by Dr Nick Trout, Softcover, 270 pages
A touching and heartfelt true story from the front lines of veterinary medicine, Helen is an older cocker spaniel found one rainy night by a generous couple eager to give the pitiful dog a happy home. But just as soon as she is rescued from a sad life on the streets and settled into a loving home, she's given a devastating prognosis. Meanwhile, Cleo is a miniature pinscher puppy who experiences a crippling leg fracture which lands her in the Dr Trout's clinic for the specialist care she needs.
Soon, the paths of these two animals, their families, and a veterinarian become surprisingly linked, and offer them all a lesson in grace that resonates to this day.
Gina's note: It doesn't seem like a good idea to criticize a book that I am trying to convince you all to buy... the cover on this one totally does NOT fit the story. You'd almost think it was a comedy, showing a miserable/scowling bulldog with an ice bag on his head. Instead this is a complex, emotional, and very spiritual story that fearlessly addresses a lot of complicated situations that involve dog lovers, their dogs, and the professionals entrusted with their care. An excellent, thought-provoking read.

A Rider's Prayer
Dearest Creator in Heaven,
Give me strength to guide my horse.
Make my hands soft and my head clear.
Let my horse understand me and I him.
My heart you have blessed with a special love of these
animals.
Let me never lose sight of it.
My soul you have gifted with a deep need for them.
Let that need never lessen.
Always let my breath catch as the sun gleams on an elegant
head.
Always may my throat tighten at the sound of a gentle nicker.
Let the scent of fresh hay and a new bag of grain be sweet to
me.
Let the touch of a warm nose on my hand always bring a smile.
I adore the joy of a warm day on the farm.
The grace and splendor of a running horse,
The thunder of its hooves makes my eyes burn and my heart
soar.
Let it always be so.
Dearest Creator grant me patience,
For horses are harnessed wind, and wind can be flighty.
Let me not frighten or harm them.
Instead show me ways to understand them.
Above all, dear Creator, fill my life with them.
When I pass from this world,
Send my soul to no heaven without them.
For this love you have given me graces my existence
And I shall cherish it and praise You for it for all time.
